NZ foreign minister on official French Polynesia visit


The French Polynesian government will be at the airport in Tahiti this afternoon to meet the New Zealand foreign minister, Murray McCully, at the start of a two-day official visit.

The minister is scheduled to have a private meeting with the territory’s president, Gaston Flosse tomorrow.

Mr McCully is travelling with New Zealand’s New Caledonia-based consul-general, Linda Te Puni, who is accredited to the French Pacific territories.

French Polynesian politicians trade barbs ahead of French minister visit


French Polynesia’s opposition leader, Oscar Temaru, has hit out at the government of Gaston Flosse by likening it to the mafia.He has also declared a boycott of this week’s visit to the assembly in Tahiti of the French overseas territories minister, Victorin Lurel, and announced a demonstration against the mafia.Mr Temaru has accused Paris of guaranteeing a corrupt system run by convicts – in a reference to Mr Flosse, who in the French sphere is the politician with the largest number of criminal convictions.

French Polynesia gets new transport minister


The French Polynesian president, Gaston Flosse, has named a senior transport ministry official, Albert Solia, as the new transport minister.

Mr Solia replaces Bruno Marty, who resigned last week after he crashed his car while being almost five times over the legal alcohol limit.

Widespread grief in French Polynesia after three children killed by drunk drivers


There has been an outpouring of grief in French Polynesia after three children were killed by drunk drivers in separate incidents.

In Taravao, more than 500 people, all dressed in white, joined a march to draw attention to drink driving which is endangering the lives of children.

Sabrina Birk, who is a parent and former politician, says alcohol abuse is a serious problem in Tahiti.

Access restricted in French Polynesia hospital strike


Striking employees at French Polynesia’s main hospital have blocked access for all vehicles except ambulances.

This comes on the second day of a stoppage at Tahiti’s Taaone hospital where hundreds of staff want to have better contracts.

French Polynesia government defends hiring French staff


French Polynesia’s ruling party has defended hiring French people for top positions after being accused of bypassing locals.

The Tahoeraa Huiraatira says it has made the choice to hire competent people, who are known in France and have the networks to add to French Polynesia’s credibility.

French Polynesia proposes global fund for climate change refugees


French Polynesia’s assembly wants a global fund to be set up to help climate change refugees in the Pacific.

It has adopted a resolution to be taken to next week’s Pacific Islands Forum summit in the Marshall Islands for it to make a concerted effort to combat the effects of sea-level rise.

French Polynesia Protestant church opposes same sex marriages


French Polynesia’s Protestant church has voted against recognising same sex marriages.

The decision is in defiance of French law, which recognises same sex marriages since May and which also applies to France’s Pacific territories.
