Refugees on Nauru have said they will reject Australia’s offer of resettlement in Cambodia after a protest on the island was staged at the Australian Embassy yesterday amid reports of three more incidents of self-harm and attempted suicide.

Detention centres on Nauru are experiencing serious water shortages and reserve supplies may run out, emails seen by Guardian Australia show.

Water restrictions are in place at the island’s three detention centres and one of the resettlement accommodation blocks, with managers concerned they may be unable to immediately replenish stocks for water tanks used throughout the network.

Ms Jolie met Nauru’s president Baron Waqa at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence Against Women in Conflict last month.

The Nauru government say there is no such violence on the island.

Asylum seekers jailed on Nauru over riot


Two asylum seekers have been jailed on Nauru for their involvement with a riot in July last year.

One asylum seeker received a two year and five months sentence for “unlawful assembly and riot”. The other asylum seeker received a reduced sentence of 11 months.
