Rugby League World Cup: Cook Islands name 24-man squad


Wigan Warriors centre Anthony Gelling will be one of the more familiar faces in head coach David Fairleigh’s squad along with Keith Lulia, who has spent the last two seasons with the Bradford Bulls.

Fairleigh can call upon a wealth of talent in the NRL while another man who plies his trade in Super League is Catalan Dragons’ Zeb Taia.

Tonga sevens coach Manu Vunipola is feeling much more prepared ahead of this weekend’s opening leg of the World Series on the Gold Coast.

Vunipola is standing in for regular coach Eddie Waqa, who is waiting for the outcome of a review with the Tonga Rugby Union.

State plans to ban exclusive rights to sports events for radio and television


RADIO and television broadcasters may no longer have exclusive coverage rights over national and major sports events.

This after the government’s announcement that it plans to have an independent survey on radio and television broadcasting and implement a law that will allow all television stations in Fiji to screen the Rugby World Cup, FIFA World Cup, Rugby League World Cup, Super Rugby and other events.

Tahiti international banned for six months


FIFA have formally suspended Tahiti international Vincent Simon after the defender was found to have violated anti-doping regulations.

Vincent was banned after his tests showed traces of the prohibited drug tuaminoheptane following their 8-0 defeat to Uruguay in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

The tow-in versus paddle in controversy has reached a new climax, following the Dave Wassel versus John Duval wave battle, in Sapinus, Tahiti.

The local surfers and bodyboarders say tow-in is not good, and if it can be paddled, there’s no towing allowed in the French Polynesian spot.

Team PNG has won three gold medals in weightlifting at the 9th Pacific Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna.

These medals were won by weightlifter, Morea Baru, yesterday afternoon.

Fred Bobola took out a silver.
